Apparently there is some really fine print in my marriage contract that says the barbeque is the strict domain of the husband and that the side dishes are my responsibility. This is fine by me; let the hubby stand over the grill, working up a sweat, acting all manly, while I work away in the house where there is air conditioning and no bugs. And when I say work, what I really mean is toss together a few things, let the flavors come together in the fridge while I read a book or something. I like to keep it simple but not make it look like I did so.
This Asian coleslaw is not only super easy but allergy-friendly as well; it is gluten-free, dairy-free and thanks to Sunbutter, nut-free. Since it doesn’t contain any mayonnaise it is great for eating outdoors with Asian Barbeque Ribs.
So whether you are manning the grill or “slaving away” over the side dishes this Memorial Day, I wish you a fun and safe holiday!

This looks fabulous! Love the idea of adding sunbutter. I need to see if my husband has that grill gene–I usually wind up “manning” the bbq. Not sure how that happened.
Thanks Nancy – I kind of think I would be a great griller, just not ready to have to fight for it! Enjoy the weekend!
This sounds delicious! Just to make sure I’ve got it right, that’s 1/4 tsp. rice vinegar?
Sorry Tammie. That was a typo – it is actually 1/4 cup of rice vinegar! Thanks for pointing this out to me – I have corrected the recipe now.

I’m with Nancy. Adding Sunbutter is a great idea. Since the division of labor is the same at my house, I’ll be whipping up your salad and sneaking off to read a good book soon.
Happy reading Wendy! We will just keep it between us how easy this is!
I can’t wait to try this recipe. Yum! Sunbutter is an addictive substance in our house, and beloved because of my peanut allergy. I’ve been waiting to try it on something other than a rice cake, so this is perfect.
Hi Janelle, I often use Sunbutter in place of peanut butter in Asian-inspired dishes, it actually has more depth of flavor which I really love and no chance of that nasty reaction to peanuts that some in our family have!
mmm yum!!! this looks absolutely DELICIOUS like none other! I love that it uses sunbutter; that’s seriously my favorite nutbutter EVER! (even though it’s technically a seed butta!) thanks for the recipe idea!
Hi Olivia, Sunbutter has been a staple in our house since we discovered my nephew has a nasty peanut allergy. We all just love it!
I will definitely be making this Carol! I love asian coleslaw. And I love your end of the BBQ bargain :)
Thanks Maggie, it works for me!
Ooh, Carol, I like the idea of cole slaw made with sunbutter! It looks yummy, too. :-) Hope you had a wonderful long weekend! Many thanks to your dad for his service to our country.

Shirley
Thank you SHirley, I will pass this on to my dad.

Beautiful beautiful salad!! I am so making this! My boys would totally devour this one, especially since sunbutter is a staple in our house! And, I can see more and more of why Thom and Kurt would get along so well. Kurt is also in charge of the grill!
Thank you my dear! We can send Kurt & Thom out to the hot grill and stay inside all nice and cool and drink a cocktail or something :)
It looks great, but I’ve got a question: will people that don’t like traditional coleslaw stand much chance of liking this? It looks absolutely delicious, but I *despise* coleslaw, and I would hate to think I might not like this as well~.
Hmm, well that is a tricky question. It depends I guess on what you don’t like about coleslaw. Is it the cabbage? If so, then probably not. I can say this, my son does not like mayonaise so he doesn’t usually like colesalw but loves this.
I made this with your orange chicken and your fabulous coconut cupcakes and this meal was quite lovely. I’m not a coleslaw fan at all, but this I can eat often! Great flavor especially the whole Asian theme! Thanks!
Hi Mandi, Thank you for letting me know! Glad you enjoyed it.
