If I could go back in time to the younger me, I’d shout to myself: TAKE COLLAGEN EVERY DAY! Collagen is an important part of nearly every system in the body, not just the skin, hair and nails like some may think. Collagen is in your bones, joints, tissues and muscles. Our bodies produce more until around age 25, when we begin to lose it and no longer produce it. This is why supplementing collagen is so important. My daily routine for the last year or so has been to take collagen. I usually stir it into my coffee so that I never forget to take it, but occasionally I’ll make a smoothie, stir it into soup or add it to another recipe.

Lately I’ve been reading up on collagen, trying to understand the differences between different brands or different sources of it. Great Lakes Gelatin is one of my favorites and their collagen comes from pasture-raised and grass-fed cattle in Argentina and Brazil. Having been to Argentina a couple years ago and seeing how their cattle is raised and cared for, I have to say that I feel good about this source. Plus, the company has been researching and producing collagen products since 1922, meaning they know their stuff!

Great Lakes Gelatin’s products are easily digestible, and they mix into liquids very easily, which is important in a collagen product because the last thing you want is to have to pull out the blender just to get a good mix. Collagen should stir in easily so that it is convenient enough to take daily. If you want to learn more about collagen, check out this page on their site.

Meanwhile, here’s a delicious smoothie recipe from Great Lakes Gelatin, using their best-selling collagen product.
