Gluten-Free French Toast Sticks with Vitamin D Fortified Cherry Sauce
This French toast has a purpose! I mean, other than being deliciously satisfying. This recipe has the added benefit of liquid vitamin D3 in it. Whether you’re trying to get your kids to take their vitamins, or you want to boost the nutrients they’re getting in meals, these Gluten-Free French Toast Sticks with Vitamin D Fortified Cherry Sauce are a great way to do it.
In this recipe, I used ChildLife Essentials Liquid Vitamin D3. Vitamin D has long been associated primarily with bone health, but it’s important for not only your bones, but your immune system and other areas of the body. Many Americans are deficient in it. In children, a deficiency in vitamin D can lead to muscle weakness, brittle bones, and it has also been hypothesized that a deficiency in vitamin D can contribute to asthma and exacerbate asthma symptoms.
For a meal like French toast that is often not that nutritious, these French toast sticks really stand out. They use maple syrup, not sugar, as the sweetener, and use cherries, which are packed with antioxidants. This is a gluten-free breakfast that kids and parents can both get behind!

Gluten-Free French Toast Sticks with Vitamin D Fortified Cherry Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 (10-ounce) package frozen cherries, thawed
- ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons water , divided
- ¼ cup pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 8 drops ChildLife Essentials Liquid Vitamin D3
- 8 slices gluten-free bread
- 3 large eggs
- ¾ cup milk
- 2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine the cherries, ¼ cup water, maple syrup, and lemon juice and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat. Mash the cherries with a potato masher or the back of a spoon.
- Combine the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and mix well. Add to the cherry mixture, raise heat, and bring to a boil. Stir and cook until the mixture thickens, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and add the vitamin D3 drops. Let cool while making the toast sticks.
- Cut the bread into thirds length-wise.
- In a wide, shallow bowl or pie plate, lightly beat the eggs. Add the milk and vanilla and mix well.
- Heat a large non-stick pan over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of butter and let melt. Dip the toast sticks into the egg and milk mixture and let it get saturated. Let the excess liquid drip off and place the sticks in the hot pan. Cook in batches; do not overcrowd the pan. Cook until golden brown, about 4 minutes, and flip and cook on the other side until golden brown, another 3-4 minutes. Repeat with remaining bread sticks, adding more butter to the pan between batches.
- Serve the French toast sticks with the cherry dipping sauce.
