A fun twist on a classic picnic staple, this spicy tuna salad uses hummus to replace some of the mayo which makes it creamy, flavorful, and adds an extra boost of protein.

Spicy Tuna Salad

Ingredients 

  • 2 (6-ounce) cans albacore tuna, , preferably no salt added
  • ¼ cup hummus, any variety
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon harissa sauce/paste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon kosher or fine sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
  • ½ cup grated carrot
  • ¼ cup minced shallot

Instructions 

  • Drain the tuna and transfer to a mixing bowl. Break up the fish with a fork and then add the hummus, mayonnaise, harissa, lemon juice, and spices. Stir to combine. Fold in the carrot and shallot.
  • Transfer to an airtight container or assemble into sandwiches. (Salad can be made up to 1 day ahead of time. Sandwiches should be enjoyed the same day.)
