Children’s birthday parties need to have cake or cupcakes – it’s just a fact. Unless you want to have a bunch of very disappointed kids.

If you want pretty cupcakes but aren’t a cake decorating expert, I’ve got an idea for you – get those kids to do the decorating for you! Not only do you end up with cute cupcakes, you give them a fun activity to do at the party.

These flower cupcakes are adorable and so simple, even little ones can make them and have fun.

To make life really easy, start with a boxed gluten free chocolate cake mix and store-bought frosting. From there, all you need is some little terra cotta flower pots, lollipop sticks, decorating icing, crushed chocolate cookie crumbs, and some candy fruit rings, jelly beans, and gummy worms.

Make sure your candy is allergen free. To make the flowers for these cupcakes, we used Surf Sweets made with organic ingredients and free of corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors.

You can order the little terra cotta pots from Amazon or find them at a craft or garden store. I used 2-inch pots, but if you can’t find them, just bake the cupcakes in a muffin tin (I recommend you use green cupcake liners) and they will be almost as cute. If using the pots, make sure you wash and dry them first.

To make the flowers, simply put a dot of decorating frosting on jelly beans, then “paste” them on the candy rings. Then stick a lollipop stick into the ring and stick the flower into the cupcake. Don’t forget the gummy worms! After all, we all know that worms are good for gardens!

Oh my are these not the most adorable desserts? I saw some pretty creative birthday treats when I taught kindergarten, but these “take the cake”! xo
