Gluten Free Hawaiian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Recipe

At my local grocery store deli, there are always packages of Hawaiian sweet bread that look delicious but are definitely not gluten free. I used to be a little upset that I couldn’t have them but eventually I learned (and you should too) to put blinders on when it comes to things that are gluten-filled. I learned to view them as toxins, because for my body that’s exactly what they are. The discipline I have for keeping strictly gluten-free doesn’t always quell my cravings, however, so I found myself missing Hawaiian sweet bread recently and wondered if I could get my hands on a gluten-free version.

Lo and behold … Canyon Bakehouse had what I was looking for. Their newest product is a gluten-free Hawaiian sweet bread loaf that is just as delicious as what I remember Hawaiian bread tasting like from my gluten-eating days of decades past.

I got creative with this bread and put my own island-style twist on a classic grilled cheese – Gluten Free Hawaiian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches! I added some crushes pineapple and hot sauce to a cheese mixture, topped with ham and cooked it up. Plus, I added my special trick to making a grilled cheese perfectly crispy and brown: mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside of the bread.

It may seem like an odd combination at first, but have I ever steered you wrong? Trust me on this, you’re going to love this new take on a classic!

Aloha!

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces whipped cream cheese
  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 20-ounce can crushed pineapple well drained
  • 3-4 dashes hot sauce optional
  • 1 loaf Canyon Bakehouse Gluten Free Hawaiian Sweet Bread
  • ¾ pound thinly sliced deli ham
  • Gluten free nonstick cooking spray
  • 4 tablespoons approximately mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
  • Combine the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, pineapple, and hot sauce, if using, and mix well. Spread the mixture on all the slices of bread. Top half the bread slices with ham and then place the other halves on top.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat and spray with cooking spray. Spread mayonnaise on the outside of one side of each sandwich and place on the skillet, mayonnaise side down. Spread the top slice with mayonnaise. Cover the skillet and cook until the bottom is golden brown, about 3 minutes. Flip the sandwiches and cook for another 3 minute or until the bottom is golden brown and the cheese melts. Keep warm in the oven while cooking the rest of the sandwiches.
