You came here looking for the magic number, right? How many issues will be in the hands of the readers? Funny you should ask … when we first started the magazine we thought that number was pretty cut and dry. Each magazine reports the number of issues that they sell through stores and to subscribers, right?
Wow were we surprised to find out that the way that it ACTUALLY works is that most magazines print WAY more issues than they sell and the stores end up trashing most of them. We even saw some magazines leave 5,000 copies at a tradeshow that only had 300 attendees – and all 5,000 of those were counted in their circulation numbers!
We couldn’t handle the idea of wasting all of that paper and money just to sell advertisers on an inflated number that wouldn’t even help advertise their products. So, we dug into our actual store sales and analyzed which stores were selling how many copies of the magazine and we only supplied them with the actual numbers they were selling.
After narrowing our distribution down to absolutely minimize waste, we now produce between 55,000 and 75,000 copies per issue, ensuring that our advertisers are actually seen by our readers and that no one is paying for copies that end up in the trash!
