Gluten Free London Broil with Balsamic Onion Marmalade Recipe
Some friends were in town this week visiting from Australia and the only chance we had to get together over a meal was on a week day. So I invited them for dinner and employed one of my favorite workday entertaining ploys.
I tossed together a quick gluten-free marinade in the morning, threw in a London Broil and fancied the cooked meat up with a sinfully lovely, gluten-free balsamic onion marmalade I had languishing in the fridge. With the addition of some roasted sweet potatoes, a fresh salad and some gluten-free Country Strawberry Shortcakes, we had ourselves a stress-free dinner party right smack dab in the middle of the week.
London Broil is economical, flavorful and lean. And super easy to prepare. It is a staple in our house since I can cook once and eat at least twice. I always have some left over which I turn into a main course salad or make steak sandwiches on gluten-free bread the next day.
Well known “secrets” to great London Broil are to marinate it and cut it across the grain. Marinating imparts flavor and correct carving yields tender slices. My secret is to glam it up with Balsamic Onion Marinade which can be made a week ahead, is good warm, room temp or cold and has dozens of uses. A favorite of mine is to put some on a gluten-free cracker, crumble on some goat cheese and top with a light sprinkle of fresh thyme.
Gluten Free London Broil with Balsamic Onion Marmalade Recipe
Ingredients
London Broil
- 2 tablespoons gluten-free soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3-4 sprigs fresh thyme
- 1 clove garlic - finely minced or grated on a microplane grater
- ½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1 (3 lb package) London broil
Balsamic Onion Marmalade
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 large yellow onions - cut in half and sliced
- ¾ cup balsamic vinegar
- ½ cup water
- ½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves - minced
Instructions
London Broil
- Toss all ingredients except the London broil in a large freezer bag. Close the bag and give a few gentle shakes. Add the London broil and marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.
- Preheat broiler to high and broil for 6 or 7 minutes per side. Remove from broiler and let rest, covered with foil for 10 minutes. Slice across the grain.
- For grill pan :
- Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Preheat a dry grill pan over high heat until screaming hot. Sear for 3 minutes on one side, flip over and put in preheated oven for about 8 – 10 minutes. Remove and let rest, covered with foil for 10 minutes.
- Slice across the grain.
Balsamic Onion Marmalade
- Heat oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium high heat. Add the onions and cook down for about 15 minutes or until they have softened. Add the balsamic vinegar and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated. Add the water and continue to cook until the gluten free mixture has thickened, the onions are very soft and slightly caramelized and the cooking liquid has evaporated. Add salt, pepper and thyme.
- Can be store covered in the fridge for up to a week.

I love caramelized onions and I love balsamic vinegar so right away I know that I love this recipe
WOW! Your dish sounds amazing! I would recommend trying grass fed Black Angus beef when cooking your london broil steak. It is absolutely delicious and a healthier option. I work with La Cense Beef and because our beef is 100% grass fed it is higher in omega 3 acids and lower in calorie and fat as opposed to traditional grain fed beef. Try grass fed Black Angus Beef and you will be able to taste an even bigger difference!
