Gluten Free Instant Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Gluten Free Almost Instant Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Chocolate mousse may just be the perfect naturally gluten free dessert. Then again, it may not. What makes it perfect is the creamy, silken texture, the rich luscious flavor and of course, the chocolate. What makes it not perfect is all that whisking, the uncooked eggs, and the waiting.

I am told that patience is a virtue but I am not by nature a patient person. I find no virtue in waiting hours to indulge in chocolaty goodness and usually it takes at least 4 hours if not overnight for a mousse to set up enough to eat.

So I have found virtue in my impatience. That virtue is my “almost instant” chocolate mousse. With the help of a secret weapon, I have found a way to make mousse that can be eaten just mere minutes after making it.

What is that secret weapon you may ask? SOLO Marshmallow crème. Just melt some with chocolate and a splash of water, fold in some whipped cream and voila, sinfully rich, chocolaty goodness ready to be savored (or devoured) almost instantly.  Now this is the perfect naturally gluten-free recipe!

Patience may be a virtue but personally, I think it is a little over-rated!

Ingredients

  • 1 (7 ounce container) SOLO Marshmallow Crème
  • cups semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Combine the marshmallow crème, chocolate chips and water in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Cook gently, stirring occasionally until the crème and chocolate are melted and smooth. Remove from heat and let cool. If you cooked it over very low heat, it won’t take long - just about 3 or 4 minutes.
  • Whip the cream with the vanilla until thick, soft peaks form. Fold the cream into the chocolate mixture until fully combined. Spoon into small dessert dishes and chill for about 5 minutes. Can be made a day ahead.

Your styling is great, Carol! This is very similar to a chocolate pudding/mousse I made fairly recently and blogged about, except I used my own homemade marshmallows. :)

    1. Thank you Zoe – sounds wonderful with homemade marshmallows!

This looks so light and fluffy, but how can I make this creme?

    1. April 27, 2011

If you can’t get the creme over there just use 1 1/2 cups of mini marshmallows or even regular marshmallows, they melt just fine and work the same way :) Good luck!

If you’re interested in making an actual instant chocolate mousse that doesn’t compromise on taste, look up Herve This’ chocolate chantilly. Its chocolate melted with water then whisked over a bowl of ice. The water emulsifies with the sugar molecules in the chocolate and after whisking for a while it becomes a mousse. Amazing, and you get the taste of pure chocolate.

Come on, have pity on us gluten free peep’s who also have to adhere to being dairy free. You slay us with your fabulous moose recipe pict’s ! As I read your recipe, I began to think what could I do as substitutions; Dark chocolate in place of milk chocolate, and a heavy coconut cream in place of what the cow offers. “Where there is will, there is a way” I wonder why there isn’t a non dairy whipping cream substitute. Almond ‘milk’ would be nice too. Thanks for sharing Carol!

I don’t have to adhere to a dairy free diet but I know lots of my readers do so I try. The marshmallow creme is dairy free so using dairy free chocolate and coconut cream as ou say makes this a dairy free recipe, easy peasy!
