Gluten Free Blueberry Jam Recipe
I just discovered my husband’s secret life. I have to say I was shocked to find that for quite some time the man I am married to has been sneaking around and hiding the evidence. I feel partially to blame, he has obviously been driven outside the home to find something that he felt deprived of within the home.
Oh, he’s been very clever about it. In order to leave the house without a lot of explaining he pretends he is going somewhere mundane and boring, somewhere I would not be tempted to tag along, like The Home Depot. But it is not hardware he is after. Oh no, instead he meets the beautiful, foreign woman who owns and runs the Polish Deli in the next town. From her he gets what he feels he cannot get at home. At the Polish Deli he buys outrageously expensive, itty-bitty jars of Polish blueberry jam, sneaks them into the house and then HIDES THEM! Uh huh, that’s right. He hides them away so that no one else can have any. And of course he only pays cash so there is never a paper trail and he could deny the existence of any blueberry jam. Apparently the jam is just too expensive of a treat to share with the rest of us un-discerning people who would be just as happy spreading strawberry or peach jam on our gluten-free toast.
Well, I have decided to fight back! Fortunately blueberries are super cheap right now. For half the price of one of those fancy-schmancy minuscule little jars of imported jam, I could buy pints of blueberries.
Now in the past I have not had tons of success in the canning department, you can read all about my misadventures here. But this jam is so seriously simple ANYONE can make it. And on top of that, it is refined sugar, pectin and preservative free. Yep, it contains no weird stuff, nothing but fresh blueberries, Organic, Raw Blue Agave from Wholesome Sweeteners, a pinch of salt and the juice of a lemon. That’s it!
Of course, I am NOT telling the hubby how easy this jam was to make. I am going to let him think I have worked hard to keep my man at home.
So there little Polish lady, let’s just see if your expensive sugar, pectin and preservative filled fruit gunk can compete with my wholesome, healthy and absolutely awesome homemade gluten free blueberry jam!
Gluten Free Blueberry Jam Recipe
- 2 pints fresh blueberries - rinsed
- ¾ cup agave nectar
- ¼ teaspoon kosher or fine sea salt
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Combine all ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Mash the berries with a potato masher or back of a spoon. Lower the heat so that the mixture continues to boil gently. Continue to cook uncovered, for 20 -25 minutes or until the mixture is thick. Cool to room temperature, the jam will gel as it cools. Store in clean containers in the fridge for up to a month or in the freezer for up to a year.

Hi Debbie, Thanks. I see no reason why it wouldn’t work with honey. Honey will impart a different flavor but I think it would be delish with blueberries.
Oh this looks fabulous! I only discovered recently that you can make saw some other recipes for no-pectin, no canning jam, taking almost all the effort out of it (yay, because if it’s not super-super-easy, I won’t do it). The biscuits ook pretty good too :) is that recipe online? Thanks!

I wouldn’t let on I made it myself. I’d recycle the jars and tell him it was fabulously expensive from an even more exclusive deli and refuse to reveal the location. This way I would exort cash from him when I went to “buy” him some from the store. That will teach him for sneaking around!

Hahahahaha omg, you are too dang hilarious!!! I hate to admit it, I’m just like your husband though, I hide the organic milk in the back of the fridge and whenever we have company I ask my mom to purchase the regular meats and sauces that are so much cheaper than fancy, expensive stuff!! Haha I absolutely love your humorous outlook in these posts though!! AND to top it all off, I absolutely LOVE blueberries (fave fruit ever!!) and I happen to have copious amounts of agave, blueberries and (duh) lemons and salt right on hand…can you say, I’m making this right this instant?!? Yes, you can! In fact if you search my site for Strawberry Jam you will find a very similar recipe but basically it is the same recipe without the lemon juice. So good!

Okay, after wiping the tears of laughter off of my face, I am now wiping the drool off of my chin. That jam looks amazing and so delicious on those gorgeous biscuits!! Tell that two-timing hubby of yours that if he knows what’s good for him, he will no longer be the straying type. Oh, and you can also tell him that Kurt has a secret life as well. His is just not as healthy because it involves ice cream and chocolate. And it is his children that give him away every time. ;)

I loved this post :) brilliant story! And equally what a brilliant recipe, my neighbour used to make the most dreamy blueberry jam and i havnt had anything like it since. Maybe i will give this a shot, it looks easy, healthy and if it tastes anywhere near as good as it looks, then down right yummy :)

I am wondering if this can be made from frozen (thawed) berries.
Yes, no problem. You may need to reduce the cooking time by a few minutes because I think the thawed berries will breakdown faster than fresh but this recipe is VERY forgiving! Enjoy.
Can I use frozen blueberries instead?? Would that change anything?
Yes, you can use frozen blueberries, no problem. It may take a little less time for them to breakdown so just keep an eye on them while the jam is cooking. At most I would think it may effect the time by about 5 minutes or so.
Would this work using raspberries, strawberries, or whatever else was in season?
YES! Any berry in season will work just great.

I noticed for the strawberry jam recipe, you say it only lasts a week. Do you still find that to be true, or is there a way to extend the life of the jam? THANK YOU for these recipes! I am totally pectin intolerant and you are a life saver!
If you freeze it, it will last about 6 months. To be honest with you I have never been able to keep any in the fridge for longer than a week and don’t feel comfortable saying to keep it longer than that. I am so happy you enjoy these!
So above, where you say to store the blueberry jam in the fridge for up to a month, is that a misprint? Sorry to keep asking, it’s just that I have to be really careful because I am immune suppressed. Thanks!

I just found out I am celiac , I love your recipe thanks for sharing. I have prickly pears and I am going to make them and go by your recipe method . Question if I put them in little canning jars sealed will it keep without freezing or fridge until opened? Thanks again
Yes, that should work just fine – I am lazy and once had a major canning disaster so I am always looking to avoid that which is why my recipes are so easy :) But canning will be just fine! Good luck with the gluten free lifestyle – it gets easier!
I have been browsing your sugar free jam recipes and they all look so delicious. I was wondering if any of those recipes would be easily converted into making a sugar free fig jam? I’ve been searching all over for a good one and I cant seem to find any that look promising!

In searching for a blueberry jam that I am making as favors for my daughters wedding (shoot me now 150 jars), rather than freezing this can I “can it” using the boiling method?

Hey I was wondering if I can make this with grapes or blackberries? And do can I sub in dried dates .for agave?
Not sure about the dates because I am not certain they would firm up the way the agave does but it is certainly worth a try. If I were going to expirament I would grind the dates first in a food processor, just a thought. Every fruuit I have used to make this jam works beautifully. If you do try with dates, report back and let me know how it works out. :)

Does anyone know where you can buy any type of sugar free jams like blueberry strawberry raspberry marmilade? Any kind at all?? I just resently became diabetic so im trying to find good tasting foods that have no sugar.. And recipes that use Slpenda or Sugar twin sweeteners as well as brownsuger sweeteners i found the brown sugar sweeteners but can’t find anything else i live in Fort St John Canada. please reply.

Have you looked into Coconut sugar? You can replace it for regular sugar and it is supposed to be very good for people with diabetes. You can usually get it in the grocery, health food store or you can order it from health food stores. Hope that helps :)
I love coconut sugar and use it all the time. I just have not tried making jam with it yet.
