Mulled Hot Chocolate Wine

Mulled Hot Chocolate Wine

As we move into the fall months, the thought of warm drinks become something of excitement. As a child, I loved drinking hot chocolate, as do my children today. As an adult, mulled wine sounds more appealing. I thought it would be fun to combine the two wonderful flavors together and make something that satisfies both the child and adult in us all.

Ingredients

For the Mulled Wine:

  • 1 (750 mL) bottle red wine (I used Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • ¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar

For the Hot Chocolate:

  • 2 cups (475 mL) milk or dairy-free milk
  • ½ cup (60 g) cocoa powder

To Finish:

  • ¼ cup (60 mL) Cointreau

Instructions

  • In a saucepan, combine all the mulled wine ingredients. Heat on medium until it comes to a light boil. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 30 minutes.
  • In a different saucepan, combine all the hot chocolate ingredients. Heat on medium-low and stir until the cocoa powder has dissolved. Do not bring to a boil.
  • When both saucepans are done, pour the hot chocolate into the mulled wine. Continue heating on low for a few minutes as you stir them both together. Turn off the burner and stir in the Cointreau.
