Crispy Vegan “Bacon”

I have a plethora of food sensitivities, allergies, and food preferences to deal with in my family so I am always on the hunt for things that can be enjoyed by the many.  Today, I’m super excited to share with you a game-changer in the world of vegan snacks—Crispy Vegan Bacon, or Vacon if you will. If you’ve been on the hunt for a plant-based alternative to satisfy your bacon cravings, look no further. This recipe is not only easy to make but also packed with flavor.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

First things first, let’s talk about the star of the show—San-J Organic 25% Less Sodium Tamari. This gluten-free soy sauce is a must-have in any kitchen, especially for those who are conscious about their sodium intake. It adds a rich, umami depth to the marinade, making our vegan bacon taste just as savory and satisfying as the real thing, but without all the extra salt.

Simple and DeliciousCrispy-Vegan-'Bacon'-Recipe

Making this Crispy Vegan Bacon is a breeze. You’ll whisk together the tamari with avocado oil, nutritional yeast, maple syrup, garlic powder, liquid smoke, black pepper, and smoked paprika. This flavorful mix is what gives our rice paper “bacon” its incredible taste. The process is straightforward: dip, coat, cut, and bake. In just under 10 minutes, you’ll have crispy strips of vegan bacon ready to enjoy.

Versatile and Fun

One of the best things about this vegan bacon is how versatile it is. Here are some ideas on how to enjoy it:

Breakfast Boost: Add it to your favorite vegan breakfast sandwich or wrap for that perfect crunch and smoky flavor.

Salad Topper: Crumble it over a fresh salad to give it a deliciously savory twist.

BLT: Make a classic BLT sandwich, using this crispy vegan bacon, lettuce, and fresh tomatoes. Trust me, you won’t miss the meat!

Snack Time: Enjoy it on its own as a crunchy, savory snack. Perfect for when you’re craving something salty and satisfying.

Soup Garnish: Top your soups or chowders with crispy pieces of this vegan bacon for added texture and flavor.

Healthier Choice

Not only is this recipe delicious, but it’s also a healthier choice compared to traditional bacon. It’s gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, vegetarian, and vegan, making it suitable for almost anyone. Plus, the use of San-J Organic 25% Less Sodium Tamari helps keep the sodium levels in check without sacrificing any flavor.

So, if you’re ready to try something new and exciting, give this Crispy Vegan Bacon a go. It’s a quick, delicious, and guilt-free way to enjoy that smoky bacon flavor we all love. Happy cooking! (And eating!)

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons San-J Organic 25% less sodium Tamari
  • 4 tablespoons avocado or olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon liquid smoke
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 8 – 10 pieces rice paper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together the tamari, oil, nutritional yeast, maple syrup, garlic powder, liquid smoke, pepper, and paprika. Pour into a container large enough to hold the rice paper sheets.
  • Place one piece of rice paper in the marinade, flip, and make sure it is fully coated and is starting to soften. Place on a cutting board. Dip a second piece of rice paper into the marinade, fully coating it, and then place on top of the other coated rice paper. Using a pizza cutter, cut into bacon-width strips. Place on prepared baking sheets and repeat with the rest of the ingredients, whisking the marinade occasionally to prevent spreading.
  • Bake for 7 – 8 minutes or until crisp but keep an eye on them to prevent over-cooking. Remove from the baking sheets immediately to avoid burning or over-cooking.
